TWENTY-FOUR

Stop Being a Dick

“It’s been quite some time, hasn’t it?” Finvarra walked toward George, but neither of my guys moved. “My, how big you’ve grown.”

I checked myself. Could I move? I twitched my fingers. Yep. Unless something dire happened, though, I didn’t want Finvarra to know that his spell had slid off. Damn ring; did I keep it or ditch it?

“And you,” he said, moving directly in front of me. “You keep popping up, don’t you? Why are you alive and my men dead?”

He eyed Russell but neither spoke nor moved any closer to him. Interesting. Apparently, he’d work with vampires if it helped him wrestle power from the queen, but his loathing was clear.

The fae king’s focus returned to me. “We’ll talk again, quite soon.” He moved back toward the tree just as a dwarf carrying a huge axe walked through it. “Set fire to the dead one. The other two, I want kept alive. Take them to the cells in the north.”

A smile pulled at Finvarra’s beautiful face. “In fact, put the dragon in the cell beside his brother’s.” He looked George up and down again. “No one would ever guess you were twins. This one, though,” he said, pointing at me, “put her in the cell at the end of the first hall. She and I have a few things to discuss.” He waved the dwarf toward us as he stepped back through the tree.

The dwarf swung the large axe back and forth, loosening up his arm. Sneering, he stared up at Russell. “Giant,” he muttered. The dwarf circled behind Russell and shoved him over. Russell toppled like a tree. The dwarf strutted down to Russell’s neck and drew the axe over his head. Before he could begin the downswing, I jumped forward, yanked the axe from the dwarf’s grip and swung, beheading the little asshole. Jeez, two beheadings in one night. I was starting to worry about me.

Trying not to think about my homicidal tendencies, I checked out George and Russell. Neither seemed to be hurt. Taking a chance, I touched Gloriana’s ring to George’s forehead and he came out swinging, barely stopping himself before he connected with my gut.

I wasn’t too sure a fae artifact would work on a vamp, but I gave it a try. When I touched Russell with the ring, he flew up from the ground, grabbed me by the neck, and squeezed, eyes vamp black, fangs descended. George shouted and lunged, but Clive had arrived, dropping Russell with pain while he pried Russell’s fingers from my throat.

I fell to my knees, trying desperately to draw in a breath and failing. Black spots blurred my vision. Taken down by friendly fire. The fae ring pulsed in time with my rabbiting heartbeat. Clive’s hand was on my back, his lips at my ear, but I couldn’t hear anything. It was like being underwater. I needed to breathe but couldn’t.

Love you.

And then it all went black.

I awoke in the backseat of the SUV, my head in Clive’s lap, his hand resting over my heart.
